Turkey's parliament to wipe tax debt on old scrapped vehicles

CHP MP Melih Meriç has submitted a draft law to the Turkish Grand National Assembly that would erase Motor Vehicle Tax (MTV) debt, interest, penalties and related liens for vehicles model year 2000 or earlier that have not been inspected, insured or transferred in the past five years. Owners would have one year to apply and must deliver the vehicles to authorized dismantling facilities – such as the Machine and Chemistry Industry (MKE), licensed recycling plants or bodies appointed by the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning – to qualify for the relief. The proposal notes that “model yılı 2000 ve daha eski olan araçların hurda kapsamında alınması” would terminate the tax obligation. If a vehicle later reappears, its registration can be reinstated and tax liabilities would resume. The bill, sent to the TBMM’s Plan and Budget Committee, aims to reduce financial hardship for millions of owners and cut administrative costs for the state.
