Turkey prepares law to claim exclusive economic zone in waters disputed with Greece

Turkey is drafting legislation to assert an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in maritime areas it says are under its jurisdiction, a move Athens has described as a provocation. The proposal follows Greece's recent decision to install new maritime markers in the Aegean and Ionian seas, aiming to formalise its own claims. Both countries accuse each other of undermining regional stability as they compete for dominance over the eastern Mediterranean.

The Turkish bill seeks to formalise the EEZ claim, while Greek officials warn the step could heighten tensions and disrupt ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the boundary dispute.
