Turkey prepares for COP31 climate summit in Antalya
Turkey is intensifying preparations for hosting the 31st UN Climate Change Conference (COP31), scheduled to take place in Antalya from November 9 to 20, 2026. Following a decision by 196 countries at COP30 in Brazil, Turkey has assumed the presidency and hosting duties for the summit.
Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change Murat Kurum, serving as COP31 President, has conducted 36 international diplomatic engagements to promote Turkey’s vision of an ‘implementation COP’. These activities include participation in 14 international summits and 12 official visits, with key diplomatic stops in Berlin and Copenhagen.
In preparation for the summit, various regional and academic stakeholders are organizing preparatory meetings. In Ankara, a summit focused on developing climate-resilient cities was held in collaboration with İLBANK and the Asian Development Bank, involving municipal leaders and international representatives. Additionally, Trakya University is coordinating academic and side-event proposals to be submitted to the COP31 Conference Secretariat. Local municipalities, including those in Balıkesir and Ankara, are also highlighting their regional climate adaptation strategies and sustainable urban planning initiatives as part of the broader national effort.
