Turkey proposes new safety standards for baby biscuits
The Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) has prepared a new draft standard to regulate the production and sale of baby biscuits. The regulation aims to increase transparency and ensure consumer safety through stricter nutritional and microbiological criteria.
Key changes include a ban on selling baby biscuits unpackaged or in bulk; products must be sold in protective packaging. Biscuits will be categorized as ‘sugary’ or ‘low sugar’ based on sugar content, and labeled as ‘plain’ or ‘flavored’. Salt levels are strictly limited to a maximum of 1%.
To prevent heavy metal contamination, the draft sets limits of 0.3 mg/kg for lead and 0.2 mg/kg for arsenic. Additionally, products must undergo laboratory testing to ensure they are free from microorganisms such as Salmonella and Listeria. The regulation also establishes specific limits for vitamins (A, D, E, K, C, and B group) and minerals (calcium, iron, zinc, iodine, magnesium, and manganese).
