Turkey public sector reports rise in personnel and overseas travel

Data from the Presidency of Strategy and Budget reveals significant trends in Turkish public sector employment and international travel. According to the 2026 Institutional Fiscal Status Report, 13,738 public personnel from 182 institutions were assigned to overseas duties during the first half of the year for purposes such as training, meetings, and conferences. This averages approximately 2,290 personnel per month. Despite official directives to keep such assignments to a minimum as part of austerity measures, the volume of travel remains high, though specific details regarding costs, destinations, and durations were not disclosed in the report.

Regarding total workforce numbers, the report indicates that as of late June 2026, there are 5,417,126 public employees, marking an increase of 74,872 personnel compared to the previous six-month period. A significant portion of this growth, 23,041 individuals, is attributed to employment within Information Technology Institutes (BITs). However, analysis of the data suggests complexities in how different roles are categorized, noting that the combined number of civil servants, judges, prosecutors, and academic staff stands at 3,424,534.
