Turkey Pushes Ahead with PKK Weapon Surrender and Legal Reforms

Turkish authorities expect the PKK to accelerate the surrender of its weapons in the coming weeks, citing recent setbacks for the group in Syria, Iraq and Iran. The government plans to move forward with parliamentary legislation before the summer recess, aiming to formalise the disarmament process and avoid an extraordinary session unless required.

The National Intelligence Organization (MİT) and the Armed Forces (TSK) will operate field detection and verification mechanisms to confirm weapon drops. Imralı Island, the DEM Party and the Kurdish political faction Kandil have been urged to speed up the process, and caves used for storage are to be cleared within months. The upcoming legal framework explicitly excludes any amnesty, ensuring that individuals who resume armed activities will face prosecution.
