Turkey records temperature extremes in May and June 2026

In May 2026 Turkey experienced its coldest seventh May on record, with the lowest temperature of –2 °C recorded in Ardahan and the highest of 37.9 °C in Ceylanpınar. The national May average was 1.4 °C below the 1991‑2020 norm, marking a significant deviation from long‑term averages across most regions.

In June 2026 a heat wave swept western Turkey, especially İzmir, where forecasts predicted daytime highs of 34‑35 °C, about four degrees above the seasonal norm. Meteorologists warned of increased sun‑stroke risk for vulnerable groups, heightened fire danger in agricultural and forested areas, and advised ample hydration and protection from intense UV exposure.
