Turkey experiences multiple earthquakes and seismic activity

Turkey has experienced a series of seismic events across various regions, including a notable 5.4 magnitude earthquake in Şanlıurfa on September 24, 2026. Other recorded tremors include a 5.0 magnitude quake in Adana and activity in the Black Sea near Trabzon.

Recent data from Kandilli Observatory and AFAD also show widespread minor seismic activity on September 27, affecting the Aegean and Mediterranean regions, including Kuşadası, Muğla, İzmir, and the waters off Crete. Small tremors were also noted in Balıkesir, Kayseri, and Malatya.

Experts have raised concerns regarding earthquake preparedness and urban resilience. Koray Çetin Önalan of the Chamber of Geological Engineers noted that Turkey’s destruction threshold is low and criticized current urban transformation efforts for focusing on individual buildings rather than holistic urban change. Meanwhile, geologist Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş warned that the Marmara region, specifically Istanbul, may experience long-period ground motions that could disproportionately affect high-rise and flexible structures, differing from the shorter, sharper movements expected in areas like İzmit.
