Turkey sunflower production sees harvest in Edirne and expansion in Sivas

Sunflower production and harvesting are seeing significant activity across different regions of Turkey. In Edirne, a major production hub, the harvest has commenced for crops planted in late March. Farmers in the region report that yields appear better than the previous two years, which were impacted by drought, thanks to heavy winter rainfall. The harvest in Edirne is expected to span approximately 1.5 months across 1.2 million decares of land.

In Sivas, sunflower cultivation has experienced rapid expansion as farmers seek alternatives to traditional grain production. The total planting area in Sivas grew by approximately 94 percent in one year, increasing from 98,000 decares to 190,000 decares. This growth is particularly notable in snack-type sunflowers, which saw a nearly fourfold increase in acreage. If weather conditions remain favorable, Sivas anticipates a total production of approximately 35,000 tons, consisting of 16,000 tons of oilseed and 19,000 tons of snack-type sunflowers.
