Turkey targets energy independence through gas and oil expansion
Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar has outlined the nation's strategic goals for energy independence during a meeting in Eskişehir. A primary focus is the expansion of domestic natural gas usage. Currently, 4 million households utilize domestic gas, a figure projected to rise to 8 million by the end of 2026 and reach between 16 and 17 million by 2028.
In the oil sector, Bayraktar reported that daily production in the Gabar region has surpassed 83,000 barrels, contributing to a reduction in oil imports. The Minister also highlighted ongoing developments in the Sakarya Gas Field and the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant as critical components of Turkey's long-term energy security.
Regarding the broader economy, Bayraktar noted that Turkey's economy has grown from 230 billion dollars in 2002 to 1.6 trillion dollars today, with a target of reaching 2 trillion dollars by 2027. He emphasized that achieving energy autonomy will significantly strengthen the national budget by reducing the tens of billions of dollars currently spent on energy imports.
