Turkey transportation costs spark debate over student discounts

Rising public transportation costs in Turkey are causing economic strain for low-income families and students. In Sakarya, local political leader Hakan Yazıcı noted that minibus fares have reached 40 TL, resulting in monthly commuting costs of approximately 1,760 TL for workers. He emphasized that the increase in student fares to 30 TL creates a significant burden, potentially costing a student 1,320 TL per month.

In the Akçaabat and Trabzon region, tensions have risen following the removal of student discounts and subsequent fare hikes. While student fares initially jumped from 27 TL to 50 TL, local operators later adjusted the rate to 40 TL following public backlash. Although some students attributed the loss of discounts to decisions by Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Metin Genç, reports indicate that while the municipality approved general fare increases, the specific application of student discounts is determined by the chambers to which minibus operators belong, rather than a direct municipal council decision.
