Turkish student living and transportation costs

New administrative and economic developments have impacted student living conditions in Turkey. The Ministry of Youth and Sports introduced updated regulations for state dormitories, establishing a new formula for calculating monthly mandatory expenses for dining halls and canteens based on civil servant coefficients and dormitory capacity. While this change affects operators, it does not directly mandate price increases for student meals. Concurrently, in İzmir, local authorities announced that monthly fees for specific student social facilities would remain stable.

In other regions, rising transportation costs have created economic pressure. In Sakarya, increased minibus fares have led to significant monthly commuting expenses for both workers and students. In the Akçaabat and Trabzon regions, the removal of student discounts and subsequent fare hikes sparked public tension. While local officials noted that the municipality approved general increases, the specific application of student discounts remains under the jurisdiction of the respective chambers of minibus operators.
