Turkey reports 86.3 million population and 7.9% unemployment rate

Turkey has released several key economic and demographic indicators for 2026. According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the national population reached 86,320,602 as of July 1, 2026, following an increase of 228,434 people in the first half of the year. The population is distributed nearly equally between genders, with males accounting for 50.01% and females 49.99%.

Labor market data shows the unemployment rate fell by 0.3 percentage points to 7.9% in the second quarter of 2026. Total employment rose by 155,000 to reach 32,479,000 people. While the service sector saw employment growth, the industrial sector experienced a loss of 121,000 jobs. Minister Vedat Işıkhan noted that youth unemployment also dropped to 13.9%.

Financial reports indicate Turkey's gross external debt rose by 3.5% to $539 billion in the second quarter of 2026. The private sector accounts for $318 billion of this total. Additionally, the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey reported that total banking sector deposits increased to 33.24 trillion TL. Meanwhile, the net international investment position stood at a deficit of $402.6 billion as of June 2026.
