Turkey's Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi unveils new traffic regulations
The Interior Ministry announced a comprehensive amendment to the Karayolları Trafik Yönetmeliği, published in the Official Gazette and effective immediately. The changes introduce definitions for “driver view area” and “image device” and set strict limits on equipment that may obstruct the driver’s line of sight. Phone holders, dash‑mounted cameras and other accessories may be used only if they do not exceed 5 cm in height from the dashboard and do not block the view.
Video playback while driving is prohibited, while navigation, parking‑assist, camera and vehicle‑control screens are exempt. Sound‑system installations must meet technical standards; external noise that disturbs public peace is banned, with a maximum of one 45 Hz sub‑woofer and a 300 W amplifier allowed per vehicle. Commercial passenger‑transport vehicles (classes M2 and M3) may retain individual audio‑visual devices provided the driver cannot see them.
Minister Çiftçi emphasized that the revision “clarifies rules, eliminates ambiguities and enhances traffic safety for all drivers.”
