Turkey urban transformation: 2.7 million units included since 2012

Since the implementation of Law No. 6306 in 2012, Turkey has included 2,737,000 independent units in its urban transformation program. According to data from the Urban Transformation Presidency, work has been completed in 2,369,000 of these units, while transformation processes continue for 368,000 homes and workplaces.

Istanbul accounts for approximately 47% of the total units included in the program. In the megacity, 1,274,000 units have been brought under the scope of transformation, with 998,000 completed and 276,000 currently in progress. The ‘Yarısı Bizden’ (Half is Ours) campaign has benefited 376,212 units in the city.

Haldun Ersen, President of the Urban Transformation and Urbanism Foundation (KENTSEV), noted that recent earthquakes, particularly those centered in Kahramanmaraş, have increased interest in urban renewal. Ersen stated that while there are approximately 6 million risky units nationwide, nearly 2 million require urgent transformation. In Istanbul alone, approximately 600,000 of the 1.5 million risky units need immediate renewal. The provinces with the highest levels of transformation include Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Antalya, Konya, and Elazığ.
