Turkey weather alert: Heavy rain and storms hit multiple provinces

Turkey is facing a significant weather shift as a cold air mass from the Balkans brings widespread heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and storms across the country. The Turkish State Meteorological Service has issued yellow code warnings for 14 provinces, including major hubs like Istanbul and Izmir, alerting residents to potential flooding, landslides, and transport disruptions.

In Sakarya, the impact has already been severe, with rainfall exceeding 100 kg per square meter in some areas. This has resulted in flooding in commercial zones, landslides in Akyazı that blocked riverbeds, and significant infrastructure challenges. Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality has declared an emergency, deploying 410 personnel and 145 vehicles to manage the situation.

Other regions are also bracing for impact. Istanbul expects intense rainfall through Wednesday, with northern districts facing the highest risks. Provinces such as Aydın, Samsun, Balıkesir, and Van are also under forecast for heavy thunderstorms. Along with the precipitation, temperatures are expected to drop significantly across much of the country, and strong winds reaching 40-60 km/h are predicted for the Marmara and Aegean coasts.
