CHP launches wave of expulsions and appointments as it seeks court approval for extraordinary congress

Turkey's main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), has intensified internal disciplinary actions. In the past month the party removed 43 provincial chairmen, appointed 36 new ones and dissolved seven provincial organizations. A Central Board meeting on 16 July will consider further expulsions, including three recent members whose party memberships have already been revoked.

Simultaneously, CHP officials have filed a court petition to convene an extraordinary congress, with İstanbul MP Zeynel Emre announcing the formation of a three‑person call‑team to seek a judicial order. Party leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu warned that any split would benefit the ruling AKP and reiterated the need for “purification” of the party. The moves come amid ongoing debates over the party’s “absolute nullity” case and allegations of parallel structures within the organization.
