CHP crisis, legal battle and new party poll surge

Entities: Ankara Regional Court of Justice (Bölge Adliye Mahkemesi) · Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu · Özgür Özel · Court of Cassation (Yargıtay) · Republican People’s Party (CHP)

Overview

After the Court of Appeals reinstated Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the CHP’s internal turmoil spread to provincial levels. On 20 July confrontations broke out in Ankara, Konya, Manisa, Kayseri and Samsun, with expulsions of newly appointed chairs, office vandalism, death threats and police involvement. Party members blamed “butlancılar” for nullification decisions and warned of threats to infrastructure and personal safety. On 22 July protests intensified around the party’s provincial key. In Ankara’s Güvenpark, families of martyrs and veterans held a sit‑in demanding better benefits; Anahtar Party leader Yavuz Ağıralioğlu addressed the crowd, apologising on behalf of the political establishment. In Eskişehir, former CHP provincial chair Talat Yalaz tried to surrender the key to the election board, was denied, and hung the key on the board’s door before leading a march to the Atatürk Monument, emphasizing ongoing legal and political challenges. The CHP parliamentary group continued its push for a new political formation. On 23 July Deputy Chairman Murat Emir said internal procedures for registering the party were near completion, and Özgür Özel described the prospective party as a clear alternative to the ruling AK Party while condemning recent activist detentions. A poll released on 25 July confirmed the AK Party’s national lead at 34.2 % and the new party’s 19.4 % share, keeping it second, while the CHP stayed at 11.8 % nationally. An ORC poll in Istanbul (17‑20 July) showed a tighter race, with the AK Party at 34.1 % and the CHP at 32.7 %, underscoring a competitive environment ahead of the 2026 elections. On 26 July, Ankara’s Regional Court of Justice’s nullification of the CHP’s 38th Ordinary Congress was sent by the Court of Cassation to a preliminary examination stage.
