Turkey CHP internal crisis and YENİ Parti rise

Overview

The political landscape in Turkey continues to shift following the formation of the YENİ Parti, led by former CHP MP Özgür Özel. The new party now controls 91 parliamentary seats and has completed organizational work in 60 of Turkey’s 61 provinces. Recent polling data shows a significant surge for YENİ Parti; a SONAR poll reported it leading with 34.3% of voter intention, ahead of the AK Party (30.2%), while the CHP has dropped to approximately 5%, falling below the electoral threshold.

Internally, the CHP is undergoing significant shifts and aggressive disciplinary actions. The Party Assembly has referred 49 members—including former MPs and officials such as Selin Sayek Böke and Yalçın Karatepe—to the High Disciplinary Board with requests for expulsion. Critics suggest these moves aim to consolidate Özgür Özel’s leadership by removing members from the Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu era.

Internal tensions escalated following comments by Mustafa Balbay regarding the potential closure of the CHP. Balbay suggested that if the party were to close, a new consensus would emerge and individuals would find new political paths. These remarks drew sharp rebukes from CHP officials, including former MP Atila Sertel, who criticized Balbay’s lack of loyalty, and Malatya Provincial Chairman Hakan Satılmış, who asserted that no individual has the authority to contemplate the party’s closure.

Responding to the controversy, YENİ Parti Spokesperson Zeynel Emre stated that while Balbay’s remarks might be a lapse in judgment elsewhere, the CHP has “effectively already been closed.” Emre also reported that YENİ Parti has expanded its organization to 78 of 81 provinces and 872 districts, with membership reaching 632,000.
