Turkey's Draft Law Sparks Greek Opposition Over Sovereignty Claims

PASOK MP Dimitris Mantsos criticised the Greek government for remaining silent as Turkey prepares a draft law that would embed its illegal maritime claims against Greece and Cyprus into its domestic legal order. Mantsos described the Turkish claims as "totally baseless and contrary to international maritime law and the jurisprudence of international courts," warning that they undermine bilateral relations.

The opposition party has asked the European Commission to intervene to block the bill’s passage and urged Greece to assert all its rights in the Aegean, including the establishment of marine parks and the completion of its maritime spatial plan. The government has not yet responded to these demands, and PASOK expects clarification on whether it will raise the issue in the Foreign Affairs Council or the European Council.
