Turkey's Environment Minister Signs COP31 Host Agreement in Bonn

Turkey signed the COP31 Host Country Agreement at the UN climate conference in Bonn. Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum signed the protocol together with UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell and held talks with various negotiation groups, including Africa, AOSIS, a 11‑nation umbrella group, Latin America and Caribbean, and Arab states, as well as Germany’s climate deputy minister Jochen Flasbarth.

At the same meeting the COP31 presidency, co‑led by Turkey and Australia, launched a Global Climate Action Roadmap. The plan sets a target of 35 % worldwide electrification by 2035, a 25 % reduction in building‑sector energy intensity, and a 15 % increase in circular material use. It also introduced a “Climate Implementation Bridge” to help developing and vulnerable countries translate their climate pledges into investable projects. Both Kurum and UNFCCC Secretary‑General Simon Stiell highlighted the rapid shift to renewable energy and its importance for reducing emissions and global energy costs.
