Turkey's female unemployment hits 166‑month low at 9.8%
Turkey's labour market showed a historic shift in June, with the overall unemployment rate falling to 7.6%, the lowest level since the series began in January 2005. Women’s unemployment dropped to 9.8%, marking the lowest figure in the past 166 months and the first single‑digit rate since September 2012.
The female labour force reached 12.002 million, of which 10.831 million were employed. The number of unemployed women fell to 1.171 million, the smallest count since May 2016. Among young women aged 15‑24, the unemployment rate fell to 17.3%, the lowest since the data series started in January 2014, with 331 thousand unemployed and 1.581 million employed – the highest employment level for this group on record.
According to Prof. Dr. Talha Yalta of TOBB University, 78% of the 227 thousand new jobs created in June were taken by women, reflecting an increase of 109 thousand women in the labour force while the number of unemployed women declined by 68 thousand.
