Turkey and Greece battle massive wildfires amid extreme winds
More than 115 forest fires erupted across Turkey on July 29‑30, driven by temperatures above 40 °C and winds exceeding 50 km/h. Turkish Agriculture and Forestry Minister İbrahim Yumaklı said 110 of the 115 fronts were under full control, but the largest blaze in Fethiye, Muğla forced the evacuation of 408 homes and the relocation of 703 residents. Smoke from the Turkish fires spread eastward, reaching Greek islands including Lesbos, Chios, Rhodes, Kastellorizo, the Cyclades and Crete.
In Greece, Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Evaggelos Tournas reported eleven active wildfires on August 1, with the same strong winds hampering aerial water drops and leaving the state response “at its limit”. The minister thanked firefighters, armed forces, volunteers and local authorities, and urged citizens to follow 112 emergency instructions and avoid any activity that could spark a fire. Evacuations were ordered in several settlements such as Porto Germeno, Agia Paraskevi, Kefalonia’s Kastraki and the village of Pastrá in Cephalonia.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Civil‑Protection Coordination Center on August 1 to receive an update on the fire fronts across the country. Turkish authorities also reported that major fires in Fethiye, Antalya, Balıkesir and Mersin were now largely under control, while firefighting operations continued in the Aegean island of Aidini.
