Turkey's grape genetic diversity aids climate change adaptation

Turkey's diverse grape genetic resources provide a significant advantage against the impacts of climate change on viticulture. Professor Birhan Kunter of Ankara University noted that Anatolia serves as a primary homeland for grapevines and a major center for viticulture culture.

With hundreds of local grape varieties available, Turkey possesses a wide genetic potential that can be utilized to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Kunter emphasized the importance of identifying the adaptation characteristics of these local varieties to different climates.

Efforts are currently increasing to protect existing genetic resources and develop new national varieties through selection and hybrid breeding. The Sultani seedless grape was highlighted as a globally recognized example of Turkey's viticultural value, particularly in dried grape production.
