Turkish hazelnut harvest begins amid pricing disputes
Hazelnut harvesting has commenced in the coastal regions of Turkey's Black Sea area, specifically in Giresun and Ordu. While many producers report satisfactory yields and healthy crops, there is significant tension regarding the economic viability of the season.
The Turkish Grain Board (TMO) has set the 2026/2027 season purchase prices at 255 TL per kilogram for Giresun quality and 250 TL for Levant quality. To support high-yield crops, the TMO will provide additional payments of 5.10 TL and 5 TL per kilogram for Giresun and Levant qualities, respectively.
However, producers and agricultural representatives have expressed deep disappointment, arguing that the prices fail to account for the sharp rise in production costs, including fertilizers, labor, and fuel. Many farmers are calling for a floor price of at least 300 to 400 TL per kilogram to sustain production. Some producers also noted that recent rainy weather has delayed ripening and caused some crop rot, potentially impacting overall yields.
