Rafet Dalkıran named new Turkish Air Force Commander
On 4 August 2026 the High Military Council (YAŞ) met at the Presidential Palace under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The council approved a series of personnel changes for the Turkish Armed Forces. Air Force Commander Ziya Cemal Kadıoğlu was retired and Orgeneral Rafet Dalkıran was appointed as the new Air Force Commander. Twenty‑five generals and admirals were promoted one rank, and sixty‑nine colonels were promoted to general or admiral rank, all effective 30 August 2026. Service extensions were granted to twenty‑four generals for one year and five hundred thirty colonels for two years. Two generals retired due to age on 1 September 2026 and sixty‑one generals and admirals were retired for lack of positions on 30 August 2026, raising the total number of generals and admirals from 328 to 334.
Navy Commander Oramiral Ercüment Tatlıoğlu received a one‑year extension of his term. Among the promoted officers was Alper Gezeravcı, Turkey’s first astronaut, who was elevated from colonel to brigadier general (tuğgeneral). The council also promoted Albay Özlem Karapınar to tuğgeneral, making her the Turkish Air Force’s first female general.
