Turkey's Konya and Bafra Plains See Strong Harvest Yields and Rising Grain Prices
In the Konya Plain, wheat and barley harvesting is nearly complete, with arid fields reaching yields of 350‑400 kg per hectare, well above the usual 200‑250 kg. The region expects a total grain output of 3.5‑4 million tonnes, and about 90 % of the harvest has already been sold to the state‑run Grain Board. Wheat prices have risen above 18 TL per quintal and barley above 13 TL.
Meanwhile, the Bafra Plain in Samsun reports abundant watermelon and Süheyla cantaloupe crops. Expected yields are 6‑10 tonnes per dunam for watermelon and 3‑6 tonnes per dunam for cantaloupe. Farm‑gate prices are 3‑4 TL per kilogram for watermelon and 15‑20 TL per cantaloupe, but producers say sales are lagging despite the high quality and volume. Local growers such as Necmettin Güven, Arif Güven and Cihan Özer highlight the contrast between plentiful harvests and limited market demand.
