Turkey's major cities face steep rise in tap water bills and bottled‑water prices

In Turkey, summer heat has driven up water consumption and sparked a sharp increase in both municipal water tariffs and bottled‑water (damacana) prices. Tiered tariffs in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir now charge up to 134.44 lira per cubic metre for high‑volume residential use, while basic rates start at 61 lira in Istanbul, 54.12 lira in Ankara and 25 lira in İzmir.

Bottled water prices have also surged. A 19‑litre damacana costs 150 lira in Istanbul, rising to 170‑210 lira for popular brands, with non‑refillable options reaching 240 lira. Ankara and İzmir see similar price bands, and deposits plus non‑refillable fees push initial purchase costs to 300‑350 lira. Tourist hotspots such as Bodrum, Çeşme and Marmaris charge even higher, with 19‑litre bottles ranging from 220 lira to above 250 lira. Pet bottled water prices have climbed as well, with 5‑litre bottles selling for 35‑75 lira in cities and 50‑90 lira in resort areas.

Despite improved reservoir levels compared with the previous year, the increased demand has not translated into lower rates, leaving households across Turkey facing higher water expenses during the hot season.
