Turkey's microplastic exposure from kitchen tools and tea bags highlighted
Recent scientific studies published in the journals Nature Medicine and Chemosphere show that everyday food‑preparation items in Turkey can release large amounts of micro‑ and nanoplastic particles. The Nature Medicine research found that plastic cooking utensils, storage containers and non‑stick pans shed microplastics that enter the body, but switching to wood, bamboo, stainless steel, cast‑iron cookware and glass containers can cut bodily plastic‑chemical levels within a week.
A separate Chemosphere study examined three types of tea bags—polypropylene, nylon and cellulose‑based—revealing that the polypropylene bags release more than 1.2 billion plastic particles per millilitre of hot water. Laboratory tests showed these particles are taken up by human intestinal cells and can reach the cell nucleus. Even biodegradable PLA tea bags released nanoplastics during brewing. Both reports warn of hidden health risks and recommend simple consumer changes to reduce exposure.
