Overview
A laboratory study published in July 2026 showed that common tea bags—especially those lined with polypropylene—release billions of micro‑ and nanoplastic particles into brewed tea. When these particles were introduced to human intestinal cells in vitro, the cells absorbed them and some fragments migrated to the cell nucleus, prompting researchers to warn of potential health risks and to suggest switching to loose‑leaf tea.
Later that month, additional research highlighted that everyday kitchen tools and containers in Turkey also shed large amounts of micro‑ and nanoplastics. Plastic cooking utensils, storage containers, and non‑stick pans were found to contribute to bodily plastic‑chemical levels, which could be reduced quickly by using wood, bamboo, stainless steel, cast‑iron, or glass alternatives. The same tea‑bag findings were reiterated, and even biodegradable PLA bags were shown to release nanoplastics. Both reports recommend simple consumer changes to lower exposure.
