Turkey's parliament to consider comprehensive law for martyr families and veterans
Turkey's ruling AK Party and its coalition partner Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi (MHP) have prepared a joint amendment bill titled “Bazı Kanunlarda Değişiklik Yapılmasına Dair Kanun Teklifi.” The proposal, presented by Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş and AK Party Deputy Chairman Abdulhamit Gül, will be submitted to the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly this week. It aims to expand rights and benefits for a wide range of groups, including parents of martyrs, disabled and non‑disabled veterans, and those wounded during the 15 July coup‑attempt. Specific measures include a minimum income guarantee for martyrs’ mothers and fathers and the granting of veteran status and monthly allowances to non‑disabled veterans. The draft was developed over two years through consultations coordinated by the ministry and the Defense Commission chaired by Hulusi Akar, involving many state agencies. Göktaş emphasized that “Şehit yakınlarımız ve gazilerimiz milletimizin emanetidir,” while Gül added “Gazilerimiz ve şehit ailelerimiz bize emanettir,” describing the bill as a “mujde” (good‑news) step building on reforms first introduced in 2013.
