Turkey martyr and veteran benefits legislation

In late July 2026 Turkey’s defence establishment moved toward a new law to improve support for families of martyrs and veterans. On 26 July, the Defence Commission, chaired by Hulusi Akar, reported that a draft had been prepared after extensive consultations with government bodies, experts and representatives of veteran and martyr‑family organisations. Meetings in Manisa and other locations focused on joint projects and faster assistance mechanisms.

Three days later, on 29 July, the Justice and Development Party announced a 12‑article draft to be submitted to the Grand National Assembly. Coordinated by Deputy President Cevdet Yılmaz and several ministries, the proposal would formalise the term “martyr” in population registers, guarantee monthly allowances at least at the net minimum wage, increase support payments, extend benefits to coup‑attempt injured persons and seriously wounded security personnel, and remove cost deductions for prosthetic devices. The bill is slated for presentation after a meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, marking the transition from consultation to imminent parliamentary debate.
