Turkey's new law claim sparks Greek and Cypriot calls for EU action

Greek MP Demetris Mandzos criticised the Greek government for remaining silent as Turkey prepares a draft law that would assert disputed claims against Greece in the Aegean. He urged Athens to take initiative in the Foreign Affairs Council and the European Council, noting that the PASOK‑Change movement has already asked the European Commission to intervene.

Cyprus National Security Council president Annita Dimitriou sent a parallel message, stating that Turkey must cease illegal actions if it wishes to be considered for participation in the EU SAFE defence programme. She highlighted the strategic Greece‑Cyprus partnership ahead of Cyprus’s parliamentary elections, referenced her recent meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and affirmed the ongoing electricity interconnection project between the two countries. Both officials called for a coordinated European response to Turkey’s proposed legislation.
