The newly formed New Party (Yeni Parti) in Turkey has emerged as a significant political challenger to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP). According to a recent poll by the Metropoll agency conducted in late July, the New Party leads with 30.3 percent voter support, placing it ahead of the AKP, which holds 22.4 percent.

The New Party was established in July by Ozgur Ozel, the former leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP). Ozel’s departure, along with approximately 90 to 94 MPs, followed a judicial decision by an Ankara Appeals Court that annulled the CHP’s 2023 congress and reinstated Kemal Kiliçdaroglu as the party leader. This legal intervention effectively split the CHP into two factions.

While the New Party is not yet legally permitted to participate in elections, Ozel aims to secure full legitimacy before the parliamentary elections expected in October. Meanwhile, the AKP is currently marking its 25th anniversary of existence.
