Yeni Parti prepares October congress amid CHP defections
Entities: Republican People's Party (CHP) · Ardahan (province) · Serhat Türkel · Yeni Parti · Recai Özalp
Overview
The wave of resignations that began on 29 July 2026 after former CHP General Secretary Önder Sav quit intensified throughout Turkey. High‑profile defections followed in Ardahan, where roughly 90 % of local CHP organisations left the party, in Samsun where Atakum mayor Serhat Türkel and 39 CHP district leaders transferred to Yeni Parti, and in Yalova, where six mayors, including Mehmet Gürel, switched allegiance. Additional departures occurred in Banaz (Uşak), Akçaabat, and other districts, expanding the party’s base beyond its original CHP roots.
Yeni Parti reported that branch organisations are now established in 60 of Turkey’s 81 provinces. General Secretary Ensar Aytekin said the organisation of il and ilçe branches in these provinces will be completed by the week of 1 August 2026, with a special committee focusing on the Eastern and Southeast Anatolia regions. The remaining 21 provinces are slated to follow shortly. With the party structures near completion, Yeni Parti announced that its first congress will be held in October 2026, marking its transition from a splinter movement to a nationwide political organisation.
Party officials continue to stress strong interest across the country, particularly in the eastern and southeastern zones, as the movement prepares for its inaugural congress.
