Turkey's Parliament passes Law on National Solidarity and Social Integration

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) has passed the Law on Strengthening National Solidarity and Social Integration with a significant 467 votes. The legislation, described by Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş as a historic step toward a ‘Terror-free Turkey,’ aims to provide a legal framework for the dissolution of terrorist organizations and the cessation of armed conflict.

The law has sparked diverse political reactions. Within the Yeni Parti, the vote revealed internal divisions, with 35 deputies supporting the measure and 54 voting against it. Party leader Özgür Özel defended the decision to allow deputies to vote according to their conscience rather than imposing a strict party line.

Legal experts and political figures are debating the law's implications. While some view it as a path to peace, others, such as Yunus Karamık of the Eğitim-İş Union, argue that providing special legal status to members of terrorist organizations while suppressing democratic rights for citizens is incompatible with social peace. Additionally, MHP Deputy Chairman Feti Yıldız indicated that the law may encompass Selahattin Demirtaş, though legal uncertainties remain regarding specific charges like intentional homicide.
