Turkey's dams reach record high water levels, boosting hydroelectric generation
Turkey's reservoir system hit unprecedented levels in July 2024. The average fill rate of all dams rose to 71.3% on 19 July, up from 61.4% in 2024 and 51.7% the previous year. Total active water stored reached 72.53 billion m³, a 139.9% increase over the same period last year. The surge in water inflows, especially at key dams such as Keban, Deriner, Altınkaya, Hirfanlı, Boyabat, Oymapınar and Alpaslan‑1, helped hydroelectric output climb 68% in the first half of the year to 57 billion kWh, raising the share of hydroelectric plants above 32% of Turkey’s total electricity generation. A separate report on 113 monitored dams showed an average fill of 67.6%, with several near full capacity and others at critical low levels. In contrast, Ankara’s reservoirs remained low, with total capacity of 1.454 trillion m³ but only 654 million m³ of water, yielding an overall fill of 44.99% and an active usable water ratio of 38.58%. These figures illustrate a stark regional disparity in water availability despite the national abundance.
