Following the sharp rise reported in Aydın province on 23 July 2026 and the nationwide average fill of about 68 % on 25 July, Turkey’s reservoir system continued to improve. By 19 July, the average fill rate of the 113 monitored dams climbed to 71.3 %, up from 61.4 % in 2024 and 51.7 % a year earlier. Total active water stored nationwide reached 72.53 billion m³ in July, a 140 % increase over the same period last year.

The abundant water translated into a substantial boost in hydro‑electric generation. In the first half of 2026, Turkey produced 57 billion kWh of hydro‑electric power, 68 % more than the previous year, raising the share of hydro‑electricity in total generation to over 32 %. Major basin dams such as Keban, Deriner, Altınkaya, Hirfanlı, Boyabat, Oymapınar and Alpaslan‑1 recorded especially high inflows.

Despite many reservoirs nearing capacity, some basins remain critically low. Ankara’s water authority reported that, of its 1.454 trillion m³ total capacity, 654 million m³ (44.99 % fill) was on hand, with an actively usable water ratio of 38.58 % and a daily inflow of about 205 thousand m³, indicating that overall levels are still declining in parts of the system.
