Turkey's State Hydraulic Works advances flood control and irrigation projects in Ağrı and Erzurum
The General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSİ), led by General Manager Mehmet Akif Balta, is expanding infrastructure to curb flood risk and boost agricultural productivity in eastern Turkey. In Ağrı Province, DSİ continues flood‑control works on the Karasu River in the provincial centre and in the Diyadin and Eleşkirt districts, aiming to protect lives and property, reduce damage from flash floods and improve the aesthetic quality of urban areas.
In Erzurum Province, DSİ is building the Doruklu Dam in Tortum district (42.5 m high, 866,000 m³ storage) and the Kavuşturan Reservoir in Pasinler district (26.4 m high, 221,000 m³ storage). Together the two facilities will bring modern irrigation to about 2,680 decares of farmland, lower irrigation costs, raise crop yields and quality, and are projected to add roughly 33.5 million Turkish lira in agricultural revenue each year by 2026. Balta cited climate‑change‑driven irregular rainfall as the driver behind the heightened flood threat and emphasized DSİ’s commitment to sustainable water management across the country.
