Turkey's TBMM Dismisses Multiple Party Proposals

In a plenary session of the Grand National Assembly, parliament rejected a series of opposition group proposals. The Yeni Yol Party's motion calling for an inquiry into teachers' structural problems, reinstating base‑salary rights for private‑sector educators, ending the paid‑teacher system and addressing interview‑related grievances was voted down by the AKP‑MHP coalition. Opposition MPs denounced the decision, describing the paid‑teacher regime as “modern slavery” and accusing the government of police repression against teachers on hunger strike.

The same session also saw the rejection of proposals from the IYI Party on childcare during school holidays, the DEM Party on renewable energy, the CHP on NATO summit measures, and other items. Lawmakers criticized the heavy security restrictions imposed ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, the large number of arrests, and the perceived curtailment of civil liberties, arguing that the safeguards were disproportionate and undermined citizens' rights.
