Turkey's Urban Renewal and Infrastructure Projects Face Ongoing Challenges

Construction expert Ömer Develioğlu warned that disputes between landowners and contractors, along with unfinished buildings, remain major problems in Turkey's rapid urban‑renewal projects, especially in Istanbul. He highlighted the need for contractors with regional experience, strong capital, technical capacity and fair contracts to ensure safety and quality after recent earthquakes.

Osmaniye Governor Mehmet Fatih Serdengeçti reported that, since the January 2023 earthquake, the province has planned 10,578 new homes, delivering 5,432 so far, while the remainder are under various stages of construction. He noted a total provincial budget of 77.3 billion lira for 179 large projects, including the Mersin‑Adana‑Osmaniye‑Gaziantep high‑speed rail (84 % complete), the Savrun Dam (80 % complete), new schools, hospitals, water‑supply works and expansion of organized industrial zones.
