Turkey's wheat and sunflower harvests confront low prices

In Bilecik's Osmaneli district, farmer Zekayi Karaca expanded his wheat cultivation from about 60‑70 decares to 400‑500 decares, contributing to the province's expected harvest of 167,500 tons from 335,000 decares. Despite high yields, wheat prices have remained unchanged at roughly 11‑12 Turkish lira per kilogram, disappointing farmers who had hoped for a price of 14‑15 lira.

In Balıkesir's Manyas district, rising wheat‑seed costs have prompted growers to switch to sunflower. The Manyas Oilseed Cooperative, led by Sadettin Kalpakçı, reports that about 2,700 tons of sunflower are expected from 285 members, with a total harvest forecast of roughly 3,500 tons. Prices will be set based on oil content, with announcements pending from the regional office in Edirne.
