YENİ Parti draws hundreds of former CHP members amid mass resignations
Following the establishment of the YENİ Parti by Özgür Özel, a wave of defections from the Republican People’s Party (CHP) has accelerated. In İzmir’s Bornova municipal council, 22 of the 24 CHP councillors resigned, signalling a broader shift that could see many of them join the new party. Özel told supporters that the party is aware of more than 700 000 resignations across the country and urged former CHP members to “quit the coup‑plotters, the thieves and the tyrants.”
The YENİ Parti’s fundraising campaign raised 240 305 252 Turkish lira from 113 678 donors in its first five days. The party also unveiled a new “Mahalle Meclisleri” organisational model based on direct democracy and announced that it had completed district branches in 41 provinces, targeting 60 provinces by August. Its first open group meeting in the Turkish Grand National Assembly attracted applause, during which Özel reiterated the party’s aim to become a governing force and explained procedural rules for calling an extraordinary congress.
Additional milestones include the appointment of Nejat Türktaş as the party’s founding provincial chairman in Konya and the rapid expansion of local structures, with party officials reporting strong grassroots support and volunteer‑driven funding.
