Yeni Parti expansion and Üsküdar political crisis

Overview

Since its formal registration in July 2026, Yeni Parti has undergone rapid expansion under Özgür Özel. After reporting membership numbers exceeding 600,000 in late August, the party has focused on organizational growth and defining its political identity. In early September 2026, the party opened new district offices in Uzunköprü and Güzelbahçe. During subsequent visits to the Trakya region, Özel emphasized a “livelihood guarantee” and criticized current economic policies, proposing the nationalization of privatized highways and bridges.

As the party prepares for its major congress scheduled for November 14-15 at the Ankara Arena, internal organizational structures are taking shape. Selin Sayek Böke is expected to serve as General Secretary, with several figures identified as potential members of the Central Executive Board. Local competition is also rising, evidenced by Mustafa Erdi Çakır’s candidacy for the Ortahisar District Presidency in Trabzon and scheduled delegate elections in Kemer.

In Üsküdar, a political crisis has emerged following the arrest of Mayor Sinem Dedetaş on charges including bribery, extortion, and forming a criminal organization. Following the arrest of council members Amine Cansu Çelik and Ekrem Baki, Dündar Ziya Gültekin of the AK Party was elected Deputy Mayor after a four-round voting process. Gültekin, representing the People's Alliance, secured 23 votes in the final round, defeating the joint CHP and Yeni Parti candidate, Sibel Tan Çetinkaya, who received 19 votes. This election follows a previous attempt on August 5 that was invalidated by a court decision. Opposition leaders from the CHP and Yeni Parti have characterized this transition as an “irade gaspı” (usurpation of will), alleging that judicial pressure and the arrest of specific council members were used to facilitate the change in administration. They further claim that some members were coerced into switching to the AK Party through legal threats or promises regarding family members.
