Yeni Parti consolidates, opposition reshapes
Entities: Yeni Parti · Özgür Özel · Republican People's Party (CHP) · Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu · Republican People’s Party (CHP)
Overview
Following the court‑ordered removal of Özgür Özel and 90 CHP deputies in May 2026, the Yeni Parti was formally registered on 24 July 2026. Özel was elected party chairman and an 80‑member assembly and a 15‑member discipline board were appointed. The party’s founding documents, signed by 91 CHP MPs, were submitted to the Interior Ministry, instantly reducing CHP’s parliamentary strength from 135 to 44 seats and making Yeni Parti the second‑largest opposition group after the ruling AKP.
Mass resignations accelerated after the launch, with provincial chairs and thousands of local officials across Düzce, İzmir, Aydın, Diyarbakır, Ardahan, Edirne and other provinces leaving the CHP. New MPs, including Şadan Şimşek and Melih Meriç, publicly joined Yeni Parti, while further defections to the AKP continued, exemplified by Tuzla mayor Eren Ali Bingöl’s pending transfer.
Yeni Parti announced an ambitious plan to take control of more than 200 municipalities to build a grassroots network. A five‑day donation drive raised 240 million TL from over 113 000 supporters, and the party scheduled a congress for September‑October. Özel also reported a tentative cooperation proposal between CHP and AKP, which he denounced as a coup. The rapid structuring, fundraising and parliamentary gains position Yeni Parti as the primary challenger to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
