Turkish agricultural costs and retail losses under scrutiny

CHP Niğde Deputy Ömer Fethi Gürer has raised concerns regarding the economic challenges facing both agricultural producers and state-backed retail outlets in Turkey.

In Niğde, Gürer met with sugar beet producers ahead of the upcoming purchase campaign. Farmers reported significant increases in the costs of fertilizer, seed, pesticides, irrigation, fuel, and electricity. To maintain production levels for the following year, producers are requesting purchase prices of at least 4,000 to 4,500 Turkish Liras per unit, noting that rising input costs are currently outpacing their income.

Separately, Gürer addressed the financial performance of Tarım Kredi Marketleri. He reported that the retail chain recorded a net loss of over 1.09 billion Turkish Liras in the first half of 2026, despite generating 43.5 billion Liras in revenue. Gürer highlighted that 30 branches have been closed and 1,808 employees have lost their jobs over the past year. He has called for transparency regarding the causes of these losses and the decision-making processes behind the company's structural changes.
