Banana producers in Turkey face economic pressure despite high yields

Banana producers in Turkey’s Mediterranean coastal regions, specifically Anamur and Bozyazı, are facing significant economic challenges despite a healthy harvest. The Anamur Banana Producers Association expects this year’s yield to reach between 900,000 and 1 million tons, but producers report that field prices have dropped as low as 8 TL per kilogram.

Industry representatives, including Salim Erdem and Ali Ufuk Yılmaz, have raised concerns regarding competition from imported bananas. They argue that imported products undergo different treatments for long-distance transport, whereas local bananas are grown without chemicals to preserve natural flavor and nutritional value. Producers are calling for government intervention, including revised customs policies, quotas, or tax regulations on imports to protect domestic agriculture.

To mitigate immediate financial losses, the Association has advised farmers not to rush their sales, predicting a potential upward movement in prices due to supply and demand dynamics. Producers emphasize that choosing local bananas supports the domestic economy and reduces the carbon footprint associated with long-distance logistics.
