Turkish banana production economic crisis

Overview

Banana producers in the Anamur and Bozyazı regions of Turkey are facing an economic crisis driven by rising production costs and competition from imported bananas. CHP Mersin Deputy Gülcan Kış reported that production costs have reached 42 lira per kilogram, while selling prices remain significantly lower, ranging from 8 to 25 lira depending on quality. Kış warned that producers may be forced to dismantle greenhouse facilities due to debt and unsustainable market conditions, suggesting that Turkey adopt support models similar to those in Ecuador, the Philippines, or the European Union.

In response to these pressures, the Anamur Banana Producers Union has called for a review of customs policies and the implementation of protection mechanisms, such as quotas or specific tax regulations for retailers. While the union expects a yield of 900,000 to 1 million tons this year, officials noted that local products face stiff competition from imports that use different preservation methods for longer shelf lives. Producers argue that while imported bananas are treated for long-distance transport, local varieties are grown without chemicals to preserve natural flavor and nutritional value.

To mitigate immediate financial losses, union spokesperson Ali Ufuk Yılmaz and industry representative Salim Erdem have advised farmers to manage their harvest timing carefully. They anticipate potential price increases due to supply and demand dynamics, emphasizing that supporting local bananas helps the domestic economy and reduces the carbon footprint associated with long-distance logistics.
