Turkish Bus Companies Cut Free Refreshments Amid Rising Costs

Intercity bus operators in Turkey are ending most complimentary snacks as operating expenses surge. Higher diesel prices, tolls, bridge fees, terminal charges and costly online ticket‑sale commissions have forced firms to scale back services that once included cake, biscuits and even ice‑cream. Many routes now offer only basic hot and cold drinks, and some companies are considering a paid‑refreshment model similar to airlines.

Kars Bus Drivers and Operators Association president Mustafa Kıransal warned that a 1,500‑km Kars‑Istanbul ticket now costs about 2,100 lira while diesel has risen to 80 lira per litre, making free treats unaffordable. Eyüp Fatih Bay, head of the Malatya branch of the Turkish Bus Operators Federation (TOFED), echoed the concerns, noting that online platforms charge roughly 13 % commission, further squeezing cash flow. Both officials said the industry’s financial strain is likely to reshape the traditional on‑board hospitality offered to passengers.
