Turkey bus operators cost crisis

Overview

In late July 2026, Turkish minibus and private bus operators began publicly demanding fare increases, citing sharply higher diesel, tire, parts, labour costs and the financial burden of free travel cards. Associations in Eskişehir and Ankara urged municipal and government intervention to revise tariffs and alleviate platform congestion, warning that without higher fares service quality could suffer.

By early August, the same operators shifted to cutting complimentary onboard refreshments. Intercity firms reduced or eliminated free snacks and desserts, offering only basic drinks, as diesel prices, tolls, terminal fees and online ticket‑sale commissions squeezed cash flow. Leaders in Kars and Malatya highlighted ticket price hikes and considered introducing paid‑refreshment models, underscoring the deepening financial strain on Turkey’s bus sector.

In response to rising fuel, operational, and personnel costs, several major cities have begun updating public transport tariffs. In Istanbul, the Metropolitan Municipality Council implemented a 10 percent increase in late July, raising the electronic full ticket price from 42 TL to 46.20 TL. In Izmir, the ESHOT tariff was previously updated to a full fare of 35 TL.
