Turkish Cancer Society urges summer hydration for cancer patients
The Turkish Cancer Society, through volunteer dietitian and chef Yasemin Güzel, issued guidance for cancer patients coping with high summer temperatures. She stressed that adequate fluid intake – water, ayran, kefir, soups and water‑rich fruits such as watermelon, melon, strawberries, peach and apricot – is crucial to offset dehydration, loss of appetite, nausea and fatigue that can worsen during heat.
Güzel also warned that food spoils faster in the heat and advised patients with weakened immune systems to avoid street‑sold, sun‑exposed or poorly hygienic foods, washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly. For sweets, she recommended homemade fruit‑yogurt, kefir mixes or dairy‑based desserts instead of heavy, syrupy options. She emphasized that nutrition plans should be personalized, noting “Each patient’s needs are different, so dietary plans must be tailored individually.” The Society continues to provide free nutrition counseling, psychological support, accommodation and other aid to patients and families.
