Turkish child‑psychology experts say excess exam anxiety harms student performance
Clinical psychologists Özge Çelik Büyükceran and Ezgi Akyüz explain that a modest amount of exam‑related anxiety can motivate learners, but once anxiety exceeds a low threshold it impairs concentration, memory, sleep and motivation, leading to poorer academic results.
Both experts stress that parental attitudes are pivotal: praising effort and encouraging realistic goals reduces stress, whereas constant comparison, pressure to study, or linking self‑worth to grades heightens anxiety. They recommend structured, sustainable study plans, brief breathing or relaxation exercises before exams, adequate sleep and nutrition, and seeking professional support when anxiety persists or interferes with daily functioning.
